David (32) and Anna (31) are a loving white Dutch couple. A simple couple. He works at a spare parts factory for a major airline and she works in a tobacconist. Happy to have their first child, their life seems set. But when Anna’s waters break, they dive into the car and head towards the hospital and a head on crash with a truck.
David survives and Anna is left in a coma with her child being delivered by a caesarian section. It is a beautiful baby. It is a beautiful black child. Thrown into a turmoil of confusion David is not equipped to deal with the situation. With Anna in a coma and with no references he finds himself listening to the voices of friends and family.
Out of the choices he could make about how this happened — maybe it is a recessive gene, maybe she had an affair — he decides that she was raped and that he must take revenge.
When Anna wakes up out of the coma, and finds out what David has done, she is horrified. He has turned his anger on a stranger she does not even know! And she was not raped. Nor did she have an affair.
Left in the twilight zone, where nothing makes sense, David first tries to gaslight Anna into believing she was raped and then turns on her and the child.
It is only when he has a total breakdown does he come to his senses and accept the child.
